Birthday travel or stay home celebration? It’s the ultimate birthday dilemma! Some people love to jet off and make a trip out of their special day, while others prefer a cozy stay home celebration filled with friends, family and cake… lots of cake!
I’ve always been a birthday travel person — because let’s be honest, what better excuse to book a holiday than “it’s my birthday, I deserve this”?! But this year, for my 50th, I did something different. I stayed home. And guess what? My stay home celebration was actually amazing!
So, which is better… Birthday travel or stay home celebration? Let’s break it down and settle the debate!
The Case for the Birthday Getaway
Going away for your birthday has serious perks. First of all, there’s the built-in reason to spoil yourself. Spa treatments? Obviously. Extra dessert? It’s my birthday, don’t judge. Upgrading to business class? Well, I do have another year of wisdom under my belt.
It’s also an amazing way to dodge the whole “who do I invite, what if so-and-so doesn’t get along, do I have to make small talk with my cousin’s weird friend?” stress that comes with birthday gatherings. Instead, you’re off somewhere magical, drinking, eating and soaking in the bliss of travel.
But then... I Stayed Home
This year, though, I flipped the script. Fifty is a big one and rather than hopping on a plane, I stayed put! And you know what? It was kinda great. Instead of airports, packing stress and desperately trying to fit everything into my suitcase, I had a proper, celebratory moment at home. I got to be surrounded by the people who matter most, eat cake… a lot of it… and not worry about whether I had international data roaming turned on.
Plus, staying home meant I didn’t return from my birthday needing another holiday to recover from my holiday. You know what I mean! That post-trip exhaustion where you need a full week just to recover from your so-called relaxing getaway.
So... Which On is Better?
Honestly? I still love a good birthday trip, but there’s something to be said for celebrating at home too. Maybe I’m just getting wise in my old age… now that I’m officially in the ‘mature and sophisticated’ 50s club… but I finally see the appeal of a low-key, home-based birthday bash.
So, I’m curious — are you Team Birthday Getaway or Team Stay at Home and Party?
Have you ever switched it up and been surprised? Or are you forever committed to your way?
Let me know in the comments!
(And if you say both, I completely support the idea of a birthday week where you do both—because why not?)
