We knew we’d eat our fair share of chocolate in Europe, but the Lindt Chocolate Museum in Cologne took things to a whole new and delicious level. Whether you’re a chocoholic or just mildly curious, this place is 100% worth a visit — fun, informative, interactive and yes… you get to taste chocolate!
Located right along the Rhine River, the Lindt Home of Chocolate Museum (also known as the Schokoladenmuseum Köln) is one of Cologne’s most visited attractions and after spending a couple of hours here, we could see why.
First Impressions: A Chocolate Lover's Dream
From the outside, the museum is sleek and modern, sitting right on the riverbank near Cologne’s historic old town. As soon as you walk in, that familiar smell of rich, creamy Lindt chocolate hits you… and you know you’re in the right place.
The museum is a self guided experience that walks you through the history of chocolate, from its ancient roots in Central America to modern day chocolate production. Even if you’re not usually into museums, this one is visually fun and full of surprises… especially when you get to the factory section.
Highlights Inside the Lindt Chocolate Museum
-
The Famous Chocolate Fountain: One of the first stops is the giant chocolate fountain, where a staff member hands you a waffle stick dipped in warm, flowing Lindt chocolate. Yes, it’s as heavenly as it sounds.
-
Live Production Line: You can watch real chocolate being made… from pouring and shaping to wrapping and packaging… right behind glass. It’s oddly mesmerising.
-
Make Your Own Chocolate Bar: You can even design your own personalised Lindt chocolate bar. 10/10 would recommend.
-
Tasting Stations: Try chocolate from different regions of the world, from rich dark to creamy milk. It’s basically wine tasting for sweet tooths.
The Shop and Café
At the end of the museum, you land in the Lindt chocolate shop, and trust me… you’ll want everything. There are walls of pick and mix Lindt balls, limited-edition flavours, boxed gifts, and chocolate shapes for every occasion.
But my favourite moment? I found a chocolate chicken and if you know me, you know I love chickens. It was the cutest and most unexpected souvenir and yes, it came home with me… before being eaten with zero regrets!
The café is also lovely, grab a seat indoors or outside by the river and enjoy hot chocolate, cakes or dessert platters. Even if you skip the museum, it’s worth stopping in just for the café and shop.
